Release Date: 2009-08-04
Following the praise and reception of his debut album earlier this year, Ed Davenport/10-20 ran straight back into the studio eager to work on some follow-up material. Over the course of the next few months, locked into his own singular groove, he send me over a bunch of new tracks, which were all incredible.
Going back over the material, he selected and shaped four Eps from the tracks, all based around the idea of different landforms - Island, Mountain, Lake, and Isthmus. The first three of the EPs will be digital releases, and the fourth, 'Isthmus', will be pressed up as blue vinyl 7".
This EP, 'Island', first of the series, features four tracks all of which are based around his distinctive sense of groove and sound design, weird pummeling sounds and compressed layers of detail woven into the beat.
Reviews
"The most impressive thing about it, and indeed 10-20's music in general, is the way it goes about melding rhythm and atmosphere. In fact there's no real dividing line between the two, beats and melody interpenetrating one other so that the ostensibly heavy, slurred percussive stabs of opener 'Pol' bleed into an amorphous mass as the track goes on, its rich mix of micro elements swarming together to form a sticky, clotted whole. A total joy" Drowned In Sound
"As part of the Landforms EP series 10-20 drops the first of the four instalments 'Island' on us and there is no let up in quality at all after his excellent self-titled album earlier in the year, which is still on heavy rotation from me. Island takes things down a slightly smoother route, and this might be the beautiful weather talking but there seems to be a woozy sunshine vibe going on here. You can hear tropical streams and shimmering pads of sound played off against the glitch riddled beats and electronics until they all melt together." The Sonic Minefield
"10-20 is making a strong case for himself as the brightest new talent to appear on the electronic music scene since Burial." Music Musings and Miscellany
