more excavation – 8bitrecs.com!
filed in blog on Feb.10, 2009

dang, after that last post, i started digging through our old 8bitrecs releases up on archive.org – there are so many good ones! Quite a few people have gotten a lot bigger since then, which is really excellent.
Here’s my picks from the more well known artists and some of the stronger releases:
Jefre Cantu Ledesma – Dialogue

Jefre, as you probably know is the driving force behind Tarentel, who i know from back in my San Francisco days, and who contributed a solo track to our first Highpoint Lowlife compilation along with the other Tarentel members. These five pieces are hauntingly good:

Shitmat – Stickthespamupyerbumtillitreallyhurtsbabylon

Okay, so it’s completely juvenile humour, but this track still completely cracks me up! With the South Park opening sample and the Alexi Sayle samples all through, with an underlying pounding breakcore beat – ah!! in fact, i do believe this is the track that Ruaridh/TVO was referring to when in one of his last posts about the no-signal gig which i finished with a breakcore track! This track was an outtake from his first Planet Mu album “Killababyloncutz” – I had gotten the pre-release version of the album from Henry as I had drawn the artwork for Killabablycutz (see cover here), and when I found out it wasn’t on the album i immediately asked if i could put it up on 8bitrecs!
Slub – 20020524
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
Slub was originally Alex McLean and Ade Ward, now with the addition of Dave Griffiths. They used to be a lot more active doing london shows, however since then, Alex has been studying PhD Arts and Computational Technology at Goldsmiths College, had a baby, is actively involved in TOPLAB an”organisation for promotion of live algorithm programming” and Dorkbot London. Find out more about all his projects on his blog at http://yaxu.org/projects/. All the music in these pieces is composed and playing via perl scripts.

Donna Summer – 20,000 Screaming Gay Fan’s Can’t Be Wrong

I knew Jason Forrest from back on the IDM list around 2002/2003, and i managed to snag these tracks from him before his first album came out and he became pretty big! I put on the first London show for him at the tiny Betsy Trotwood club in London – was a hot and sweaty night! Grab the EP from:

John Davis
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
From memory, i believe John was working at UC Davis, and i was put in touch with him via Jefre Cantu – beautiful tranquil field recordings and processing:

Osso Bucco

Osso Bucco is Gregg Kowalsky, who you probably know from his releases on Kranky. These two pieces are a lovely compliment to each other – “Three Days The Rode” and “Three Days They Slept”
